Auld Lang Syne

May 4th 2008 by pelfy in Life Of A Journalist-To-Be

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup !
And surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Auld Lang Syne” - Ahh! I remember this song well, very well because when I was still schooling, we (my friends and I) were asked politely [read: forced] to sing for teachers who were retiring. On the stage. Sometimes during assembly. In front of everyone. YUCK!

Back then, I do not know the exact meaning of this song. Whenever my friends and I were asked [read: forced] to sing, we just go blindly to the stage, make a fool out of ourselves, and that’s it!

But today, two days before I finally bid farewell to my university friends, I realise that this song bears a very significant meaning. A paragraph from wikipedia.org explains that the song’s (Scots) title maybe translated into English literally as

“old long since”, or more idiomatically, “long long ago” or “days gone by”.

Days gone by? How sad!!

Sometimes I wish time could stop. Well, at least, stop for a minute or two so that I can mingle around with more people, but I know that is quite impossible. Sad. Very sad. But I am really looking forward to attending the class dinner after my last paper on Tuesday. Dinner. Eat-all-you-can-and-get-fat! Hooray!

Yup yup…I agree with your sis. The fun hasn’t stopped, it has just begun…once you start working, you’ll get to meet the wackiest people by far. The fun only stops at the end of April every year during Income Tax season…WUAHHHH~! :-(
