Breast Fact #1 - Self Breast Examination
October 2nd 2007 by pelfy in General DiscussionsIt’s October - The Breast Cancer Awareness month. This time, I am doing my part as a self-claimed contributor as I would like to share some facts about breast cancer with my readers.
**Facts are collected from the radiologymalaysia.org.
Now, I believe that you’ve came across the term - breast cancer and therefore I do not have to elaborate more using scientific terms which may cause you a migraine. Instead, I will be highlighting on a few issues this month (not telling you the exact titles, or else you won’t be coming back to read them). Anyway, to begin with the campaign, I will be highlighting this:
“I AM STILL SO YOUNG. I WILL NOT GET BREAST CANCER”
Now, that’s what some people say, but how true can that be? Anyway, here are some points for younger women (specifically for those aged 30 and below):
1. Self Breast Examination (SBE) should be performed monthly, after your menses/period is over.
2. If you do not find anything wrong with your breasts and do not belong to the high-risk group for breast cancer, regular SBE is adequate. An ultrasound or mammogram is not necessary.
3. If you are 30-39 years old, in addition to SBE, a clinical breast examination by your regular doctor/healthcare provider is recommended at least once every 3 years. If you visit your doctor/family-planning clinic anyway for a Pap Smear, this is an opportunity for your breasts to be examined.
4. At any time, if you find something “wrong” with your breasts, see your doctor/healthcare provider immediately.
5. Do not worry, as very often (80-90% of the time), most of the findings in the breasts are not cancer.
